An Dong(An JiCheng)

An Dong (An Jicheng) is a significant figure in contemporary Chinese art, renowned for his dedicated experimentation with Chinese characters and ink-wash painting. Born in 1962 in Yili, Xinjiang, with ancestral roots in Liuzhou, Guangxi, his childhood by the Liujiang River became a deep wellspring of creative inspiration. A graduate of the Oil Painting Department at the Guangxi Art Institute (1986), he initially focused on oil painting. He actively participated in the seminal "'85 New Wave" art movement, co-organized the "Five Artists Exhibition" (1983), and marked a stylistic transition from his "Red Period" to "Blue Period" during the 1988 Composite Images Exhibition at the National Art Museum of China in Beijing. His investigation of ancient petroglyphs at Gaolan, Zhuhai in 1989 proved pivotal, with the ensuing petroglyph series forming a crucial turning point in his early artistic development.

In 2001, An Dong formulated the concept of "calligraphic imagery art" (Shuxiang), marking the core evolution of his artistic practice. Using Chinese characters as his medium, this art form moves beyond the stylized conventions of traditional calligraphy. Through layered ink application, the tearing of Xuan paper, and the dynamic traces of the brush, he constructs a spatial philosophy of "deconstructing all forms to create all forms." This methodology synthesizes the traditional ink-wash principle of "treating the void as substantively as the inked areas" with Western Abstract Expressionism, forging a unique language of calligraphic imagery that imbues Chinese characters with a sense of "cosmology" through a continuous process of deconstruction and reconstruction.

An Dong's artistic practice remains profoundly rooted in the rich cultural soil of his heritage. His works have been exhibited in 16 countries, including France, Japan, and the United States. Notable recent solo exhibitions include: "The Rhythms of Andong Calligraphic Imagery Art Exhibition" in Macau (2025), "Na Hua Wo Wen: An Dong's Calligraphic Imagery Art Exhibition" in Liuzhou (2025), and "Tianyu Chizhen: An Dong's Calligraphic Imagery Art Exhibition" in Zhuhai (2024).

Upon entering the gallery, visitors are invited to immerse themselves in the artistic world An Dong has conjured. With rhythmic and vital brushwork, he crafts visual landscapes where movement and stillness intertwine. His works can be boldly expressive and charged with tension, or delicately nuanced and evocative of serene depth. Within the rich interplay of blacks, whites, and layered grays, the artist strategically incorporates accents of color, such as vermilion. These considered touches act like pivotal finishing strokes, infusing the overall ink tonalities with warmth and vibrancy, thereby enhancing the works' expressive power and emotional resonance.

These pieces demonstrate both An Dong's deep grounding in traditional artistry and his exploratory breakthroughs within contemporary calligraphic imagery art. By reconfiguring the language of ink and brush for our time, he breathes new vitality into the ancient art of Chinese characters, guiding viewers to experience a sublime artistic conception where heaven and earth converge within the interplay of dots and strokes. This winter, we warmly invite you to step into Jing Bainian Art Gallery once more to immerse yourself in the visual feast and contemplative journey offered by these remarkable paintings.
